Default picture comparison... free range VS caged...

god i was excited when i got the first egg from our free range chooks! but saved up a few before i cooked with the first lot..

my GOD.. how nice! egg mayo the colour of marigolds.. pankcakes to die for.. egg sarnies with butter and fresh bread.. a new taste sensation indeed!

thought i would do a comparison between caged eggs... £3 for 30 in asda.. and our home grown eggs.. by the time i had cut and arranged them, the caged egg yolks had darkened a little, but you get the idea even so..

my god what a difference!

the colour is a bit knackered in this pic.. but i was amazed at how much difference there was in terms of % yolk to white...

and when you cut them and place them next to each other.. its incredible..

the shells are so much thicker too! it takes a real whack to break our eggs.. the caged ones crack as you look at them! the shell is thicker and whiter too.. must try and get some macro's of that some time!
anyway, hope you enjoyed seeing them

with you 100% on this one, my mum has free range hens...they eat all sorts, and the eggs are just so....well you would not want to go back to supermarket eggs after them.

funny story though, i brought half a dozen home for my neighbour, she came back with 4 saying she did not like them as they looked un natural as the omlett she made was bright orange !!! I tried to explain that that is how eggs should be but she just could not get her head round it and insisted that yokes should be pale yellow

lol julia!

did you know, if you feed the chooks fresh beetroot, you can make the yolks go orangy purple?

(whereas feeding the skunks purple cabbage, gives them dark dark green poo.. but anyway...)

J - any tips for finding eggs? the girls have started laying in an acre of wilderness..

found this the other day! 19 in the caché.. cheeky chooks!

our 2 light sussex X's

our 2 silkie X's and cock... Eggburt Humpahen..

9 years back, this was a small paddock we are told...

somewhere in here.. they are hiding their eggs...

still they are happy i guess...

even if i have no idea..

where the eggs are! and 'burt sure is not telling!

well you may well loose a chicken for 21 days and then get presented with chicks .......
the only way to find he eggs will be luck or listening out for the call they make after they lay which sounds really urgent (mine you with the egg to bum ratio the noise is to be expected) and follow the sound !
Another option would be letting them out later in the mornings and provde egg boxes in their coop.......

They look delicious compared to the normal supermarket eggs

Can just imagine Rory's face though when he goes off to find dinner and comes back with a handful of chicks hehehe

I completly agree too. I ALWAYS buy free range. They do taste so much better. Your own fresh and still warm from the hen are in another league altogether. The only method of cooking worthy of them is boiling until the white is hard and the yolk is deliciously runny.
