Outside of zoos there are three bears held and all at one private collection. They are of three different species.

Until last Summer, there was also a bear with Jolly's circus.

Outside of Circuses, I believe the last privately held bear was a Brown Bear kept by a retired boxer in Scotland. It died in the early 1990s.

Hi Stu,

I think my terminology rubs off on Nerys, Game Park is my term, l think the UK equivalent would be Wildlife Park.

In Ireland we have a couple of clients with 'Game Parks' as they term them, but the correct name over here would be wildlife parks.

HTH

Ps: in the last four years l have sold six bears into European and outside EU collections, exports from the States.

Regards Rory

Hercules was bred at the Highland Wildlife Park, then sent to the US for certain 'cosmetic' proceedures that wouldn't have been PC to perform over here. He was quarantined at Edinburgh when he came back. He escaped for two weeks in the highlands before being recaptured.

Mary was, I believe, the last of Highland Wildlife Park's bears.

The Highland Wildlife Park has rather dawdled along (that's not to deny some excellent work they have achieved in refining the breeding of certain species like Cappercaille and Black Grouse) for a long time but has, in recent years, received a boost from RZSS's new Animal Manager. The place is continuring with the theme of 'Moutains and Tundra'. It is well on the way to becoming one of the best such themed collections worldwide and exhibits many rare species that cannot be seen anywhere else in the UK.

Game Park, Wildlife Park, Zoo, Safari Park - they are all one and the same thing and that is a collection of captive wildlife open to the public. The difference is purely semantic and to refer to 'zoos OR game parks' is a perfect example of tautology.

i find bears fascinating....even moreso the fact some people in the uk have kept them privately. and not just the smaller black bears but the brown 'grizzlys' too.
surely the cost of keeping one would be massive? the licence cant be cheap either!
how would you go about sourcing one tho ? :S

i am interested to know what these procedures were...

what is deemed unccepatable and why were they carried out??

... it seems very sad that an animal would be sent so far and put under stress to have COSMETIC procedures carried out ... emergency or life saving surgeries maybe.. anyway before i judge i am just interested to find out what you meant.. thanks in advance.
