Default Pet Tattoo

Has anyone had their dog tattooed? I dont mean a nice celtic band or anything before you ask I mean as an alternative way of identification.

I have chip already but I am thinking that a tattoo would be more of a deterrant to thieves as they can actually see it. I have been looking at the dog tattoo register site and they say its relatively painless but they would say that

I'm half covered in tattoos, and can say from experience that they are not painless. No idea why a dog would be different? How big are the markings? How do they hold them down?

they are pretty small, tatoos well the one on my mates greyhound is, they all have them done cos its a rescue from racing days, and the racing dogs are marked with them, I dont recon it can be painless unless they numb the area, with local anesthetic (sp)

I said relatively painless! Whatever that means... From what I can gather from the site they have a thing that clamps over the ear then stamps pins into the ear then they rub ink over it. Supposed to take a few seconds. It might not be painless but then neither is chipping.

Andy you have a stafford dont you?
If you do decide to have it tattooed then i would recomend you have it done on the inside of the leg simply because (and it does happen)
The theifs can clips the dogs ears back and that way there is no trace of a tat.

The markings would be a series of letters and numbers, it is a lot more painfull than a chip and personally i wouldnt have it done.
