I hope he feels better soon.

Those are the same symptoms my mothers cat, Keir, had.
If it's the same thing once he's on the correct diet he should do quite well.
It's expensive but now, after 4 years, my mother just gives him the vet diet on the morning and ordinary food at night.

It's at about a year old the toms show the sypmtoms and it can kill them pretty quickly even though it's quite easy to treat.

Sorry to read this Gina and I also sympathise with the cost of a special diet for Zingi.

Did the vet actually say what it was - was it crystals, bladder or kidneys?

I'm glad it was caught in time and he's going to be okay.

I don't mean to sound really harsh - I'm only trying to help, but it seems like every other week you are posting about a new reptile, and the massive reptile collection you have managed to get must cost quite a bit a week to feed... perhaps it's time to think about calling it a day and not getting anything else, or even cutting back? Perhaps that will let you pay for the care that Zingi needs a little easier

Don't take on too much, we all have to know our limits.

Sensible advice Athraven. I'd love another puppy, but while we've got 6 cats and I'm no longer working 'properly', I think we have enough to consider looking after.

Gina, that's what life is like! Bad things never seem to come in ones, they come in like a herd of elephants and you think things are never going to improve - but they do, eventually.

Don't give up hope with Zingi though, the special diet will dissolve the crystals and then presumably the vet will put him on another diet to acidise his urine to prevent more forming. Did he say whether they were struvite crystals or oxalate? However, like I said it doesn't necessarily follow that he will have to be on a special diet for the rest of his life. I've had cats with this problem who have managed to live for years back on normal cat food.

My friend's stud cat had a total blockage, but it was caused not by crystals but basically 'silt' in his urine. He was taken into the vets about 4 or 5 times and had to be catheterised. Eventually he was developing scar tissue and so her vet referred her to Christopher Day. He prescribed homeopathic treatment and the condition never came back! So there are cures out there.

Yes, you did, but it's scary how quickly it comes on isn't it? I think struvite are the more common crystals, so it's probably that. Did you know the best way to get an acidic urine is to feed your cats their natural food, which is mice??? Apparently, if you feed them mice, they have a perfect acidic urine and shouldn't get FUS (or FLUTD - whatever you wanna call it) - at least that's what the experts say!!
