Rats are brill pets. I'm getting 3 brothers tomorrow from a rescue. They are extremely friendly, sociable and intelligent if handled correctly and regularly. I've always kept rats. For info on housing try:

rats rule my wee sausage has me in fits of giggles shes mental firstly i know im breaking the rules but sausage is a rescue and shes getting a friend when shes back to full health!!
they need a friend or 3
lots of exciting toys (i got parrot toys out the poundshop and a old towel for a hammock a wheel and some fruit shaped wood)
eat dried food and fresh fruit and veg
very very friendly sausage loves to climb on my shoulder and make a nest out of my hair also loves a good scratch where she does this mad thing(theres a name for it) but basically grinds her teeth meaning she likes it
shes in a 3 teir cage with all her toys and the bottom was filled with beech chips and fleece bedding but it doesnt last they move everything around the way they want it also attached to her cage is the fancy hamster cage thing thats actually a giant wheel dont kno if anyones seen one of these but there totally cool but sorta cruel if u only use it as a house.im sorta new to this still too i only had sausage since november i was getting a rescue turtle an i was annoying her thru the bars of the cage and the girl was like oh thats my sons rat she bit him so he doesnt llook after her anymore u can take her too if u like ... so i did not having a clue lol but like all the rest of them shes been spoilt rotten

Male rats are better. Lazy and like to curl up on your lap and go to sleep. I used to carry my recently deceased old man around the house in an old hoodie sweater. He loved it!

So you get two/three boys and have two groups!!!!!

Honest girls and boys are like two different species.
My girls are pinging all over the place and always on the go whereas the boys are cuddle monkeys. Even my 5yr old granddaughter sits and cuddles my russian bly Tornado for hours. He will just sit with her and go to sleep on the couch. It's the best way I can find of getting her to be still for a few minutes. I just say' Shush, Stay still Tornado is asleep' and she will sit stil until he wakes up which could well be 2 hours.

I swear I'm going to rent him out as 'granchild control'!!!!!!

we keep rats, two girls and one boy. we keep the male seperate cos they breed very prolifically!!! at one point we had 28 babies and they was due to give birth again. so we seperated them and gave the mums a break.

The best tip i could give you is NEVER feed them food throught the bars of the cage. we learnt the hard way and even though they are soft as butter if you put your hand on the cage they will bite it to the bone if they expect it to be food!
