Default info needed on dog pedigree's

Hi all, anyone help me????

am i right in thinking that the pedigree papers given when you buy a puppy are really a matter of trust as the breeder could fill the details out with anything. The only way to be sure of pure breed is if its kc reg. yes??? so if your favoured breed is one not currently recognised by kc, your screwed and just have to trust what your told???

You could research the Sire and Dam if their kennel names are listed and trace the family tree back that way. That way you'd know if the breeder was bullsg

the breeders could tell me that the dam and sire are ''such and such'' when they are not tho couldn't they, would the kennels who bred the parents know if it really was there dogs or not?? sorry if it sounds dumb, just cant understand what use a pedigree is when its from a guy who seems a little untrustworthy??

You should get KC registered papers this way you can get 5 generations of parentage, without KC papers you could never "show" your dog at big dog shows or Crufts. KC registered is best.

Yes there is a possibility of that happening

Though its rare for people to do such a thing really only reason i can see someone doing that is a puppy farmer to try and make more money on the pups by passing them off as the KC reg dogs pups instead of the unregistered ones

If you are getting untrustworthy vibes from this guy... I would seriously think about not buying from him and try sourcing your chosen breed elsewhere... I always believe that if you want the best for your money you should buy and say that you are intending on showing... that way the seller will think that their kennel affix will be out there at shows and will want to be well represented.

Sorry to say but a kc reg and pedigree are indeed taken on trust and could send you to a dozen or more breeders/exhibitors of such dogs I know in the show scene giving us all a bad name let alone the so called puppy farmers.

If the breed of choice is not as yet recognised by the KC then there are certain rules they have to follow inorder to become a recongised breed, many are on what is called the 'Import breed register' awaiting kc recognition, see explanation via the link

Imported Breed Register Policy - The Kennel Club

Depending on the breed and of course those who are looking to get it recognised in the UK as to how trustworthy the whole situation is. Of course the other reason a breed is non recognised by the KC is it may well be a 'designer' breed whereby folk are doing it just for the money!

For me personally I have joined the KC accredited breeder scheme whereby all my animals are DNA profiled ie should allegations be made about the pedigree/parentage of any of my puppies all they have to do is collect cheek swabs/blood sample to cross reference against the DNA of my breeding animals that are already listed. I cannot register any pups without first DNA profiling their parents, its a start at least.

What breed are you looking at maybe those of us in the show scene know trustworthy folk who are working with the breed concerned?
