Default Hedgies Pros and Cons

Ive fallen in love with all the hedgies I keep seeing. At our Sanctuary we take in poorly Native ones and know from experiance that they smell. Here are some questions
1/ Do these smell
2/ How tame do they get
3/Which are better Long Ears or APH
4/Do they need heat
5/How easy are they to keep properly
6/Do they need to hibernate
Sorry to be boring but wanted peoples personal experiances (if I ever decide to get 1 I would research properly myself)

I have an aph.

She is in a cage in the dining room, so no, there is a smell, but I don't think its particularly a bad smell. (We have a rabbit in a hutch in the hall and that reeks!).
Mine is not tame at all, but she wasn't handled as a baby, but - I'm told if handled regularly from a baby then they can become very tame.
If you have a cold house, you may need to add a heat mat under your viv or cage in the winter.

(sorry if I've forgotten anything - have a terrible memory).

Okay, now in my opinion, a cage is best, for two reasons. When we got Hedgepyg, she was extremely timid and growly etc. We put her in a viv for the enclosed aspect, thinking it would give her more security. She was very scared of the noise of the glass opening on the runners for a start, also, a viv blocks out many of the natural smells of the people around and the noises and voices also. We later changed hedgepyg over to a cage and almost straight away she started to come on slowly. She could hear us all and probably got used to my smell as I was the one that went to her most, and within a short time of her being in there she would come over to me at the side of the cage instead of rolling in a ball and growling.
So - for socialisation reasons I would say a cage.
Also, I did actually find the smell quite strong when hedgepyg was in a viv, whereas a cage is airy, so I think that helps.

Hedgehogs make great Pets! - I have 2 and they are lots of fun indeed. Well apart from when you get spiked by their spines, but you get used to that in the end
