Default Any advice please, parrots

Hello all I am new here so f this is in wrong place sorry.

Anyway we have 2 Amazon parrots, one male who has been with us 16 years and a rescue female we have had 4 years. They are aged 16 and 10 .

Hubs and I are getting on a bit now and its a worry what will happen to them should we no longer be able to care for them so does anyone know of any really good sanctuaries please?

I don't know of any but would you definitely want them to go to a sanctuary ? If not then are there family or friends you could trust to look after them in the event that something does happen to you both, I think you can put it in your will to make sure they go to the homes they were intended to in the event of your deaths.
Also if not, I'm sure there are plenty of people who would be more than happy to volunteer to take in your birds if the worst happened (me being one of them !).

The best that I know of is the national parrot sanctuary in Lincolnshire. Amazing place with huge aviaries to fly in and a diet better than a lot of kids get.

if they've been pets all their lives then a sanctury may not be the best place for them. if they're not used to the company of othetr birds and only used to human companions & being in a cage in a house then moving them to a sanctury will be a massive shock to their system. not to mention the fact they'll be grieving over their owners.

the best thing to do would be to speak to family and friends and see if anyone would be willing to take them so they're lifestyle doesn't really change that much. you can put them in your will. there are plenty of parrot websites and forums for you to look at. parrot-link.co.uk and ukparrotrescue.co.uk are ones i'm a member of.

I have to disagree, especially where the national sanctuary is involved. You seem to be under the impression that the cage bound parrot simply gets hurled into a large mixed aviary and left to fend for itself as best it can. It doesn't. The people who run it know what they are doing and are utterly dedicated to parrots. They rehabilitate them so that they can get the best life possible, for ever, and never passed on again, never given a crappo diet, nobody smokes near them and fills their lungs and air sacs with smoke. In fact, one macaw came in in a cage which was so small, he couldn't even open his wings and is now flying free with all the other birds. Any parrot would be very very lucky to end up at that place believe me.It's where my lot are going when I pops me clogs.
Leaving a parrot to someone who may not really want such a huge responsibility and may not be able to care for it properly for the rest of it' life is just not "the best idea" in my opinion.
