Default killer gerbils

ok so my little sister got 3 gerbils about a year ago. we thought they were all girls but we found as you always do that one was a male and he got both of them pregnant. so we ended up with another 15 baby gerbils. so we decided to keep them all and we kept the boys with the boys and girls with mums and dad on his own. then al of a sudden the gerbils have turned on each other and are attacking each other and killing and also eating each other. i have ha loads of gerbils and my mum has had hundreds, but never anything like this! has anyone else had this problem with gerbils killing each other?
