If they dont' start to lose colour they may be badgers but I'd bet my bottom dollar they are roans.

They are agouti huskies. Husky is typically a uk term while roan is american. They are not badgers as the white on their sides is up way too far, badgers are berkshires with a blaze. Being agouti they will go lighter quicker. But its down to genetics whether they stay dark on not. As the husky parent when light it is probably that all babies will go light, although not definate.

I used to breed rats, my freinds still got a few of my huskies. I bred black huskies as the contrast was much better. I even had a siamese husky, which looked like a pink eyed white by time she was 6 months!

They are definitely roans rather than badgers.

This marking was originally called husky in the UK and Europe, but when the marking was standardised in the UK it was renamed roan. This is where the confusion on the name comes in.

Red face Would Love Any Advice I Can Get

Hi, have kept female rats for a good few years now and after loosing my last to cancer a few weeks ago i went to get a couple of more.I bought 2 male dumbo rats 3 months old.Was very pleased with them black and very freindly, named Ronnie and Reggie. We have had them for 1 week and was gutted to get up yesterday and find Reggie dead.No fighting that i had seen and could not find any bite marks on him.No signs of any illness and then today Ronnie could not move his back leg, again no wounds eating and drinking well.I rang the pet shop and have asked them to take him back and get their vet to check him over as my kids could not cope with finding him dead.Is there any illness that anyone knows of or have i just been unlucky.Fingers crossed Reggie ok and he comes back to us but i dont want him to be on his own is it safe to put another male?

Sudden death like that in a young rat could be due to many things, and yes it is possible that viral issues could cause it. I wouldn't get more rats until two weeks after Reggie's death. Most viruses in rats have shorter incubation periods than that, and if Ronnie is fine after 2 weeks, chances are it was sheer bad luck with Reggie.

Definitely get more company for Ronnie - rats are incredibly social animals and (rare exceptions aside) it would be cruel to force them to live alone, especially from such a young age. Ronnie is still young and you'll most likely fine he accepts new babies without any problem.

I would recommend looking for TWO new babies to keep him company - a trio is normally better than a pair as if the worst does happen to one, you are not left with a rat on his own. For a list of reputable breeders, try emailing kitbag@nfrs.org
