Shell I feel so sad for you. I can still remember being there with my GSD and he was 13 too. But I firmly believe that they tell you when they've had enough and if you have that close bond with your pet, you know yourself when the time is right.
Like you I cannot leave my pets with the vet, I have to be there, I have to know that the last person they see is me, because that's important to me and I believe to them. After all, they go to the vets so often and have needles so often, how can they know this will be their last one? I'll be thinking of you all today and I know this poem will make you cry, it does with me every time I read it, but I hope it gives you some comfort that what you are about to do is right for Ginny. IF IT SHOULD BE If it should be that I grow weak And pain should keep me from my sleep Then you must do what must be done For this last battle can't be won You will be sad, I understand Don't let this grief then stay your hand For this day more than all the rest Your love for me must stand the test We've had so many happy years What is to come can hold no fears You'd not want me to suffer, so The time has come, please let me go. Take me where my needs they'll tend And please stay with me to the end Hold me firm and speak with me Until my eyes no longer see. I know in time that you will see The kindness that you did for me Although my tail its last has waved From pain and suffering, I've been saved. Please don't be sad it must be you Who has this painful thing to do We've been so close, we two, these years Don't let your heart hold back its tears.

That little poem actually made me cry!
Im so sooo sorry about your gsd. As everyone else has said, you know whats best and its the hardest part of having animals. You've had 12 years together and lots and lots of great memories you will be able to think about. It wont make it any easier on you at all, but its the best for your pooch. Big hugs xxxx

Thanks for all your kind words. This morning she has great trouble getting up and looks in pain.Our vet appointment is 11.50 today. Thanks Eileen I only read the first line and that was it. Ginny has had a longer than average life for a large breed dog but weve had some great times together she has been an excellent example of how the breeds tempermant should be. We will miss her greatly but love her to much to let her suffer.Will speak later. Thanks All

bugger im cryin too!
i know its hard and it is never any consolation when someone says " shes had a long life and its her time" but she really has, 12 is a good age for her to reach and i bet shes reached it happy and knows she is loved! our thoughts are with you shell now im off to break my chocolate ban as i feel i need some while i sit and cry {{{cuddles}}}

Well people we took Ginny to the vets with very heavy hearts. The vet checked her over and agreed that the arthritis was really bad and her joint in her left leg was solid bone and her right leg was going the same way. She said the only way a GSD reached 13 1/2 years was with the correct care. It was all very peaceful and she ate a bag of cooked chicken until she went to sleep
