Default rescuing rabbits?

hi

well i have just built 2 huge rabbit runs for my rabbits, and have a lot of spare metal left over, they are very heavy duty, and would probably have room to build about 4 more runs, so could rescue a couple of pairs/trios of rabbits (same sex, not intended to breed from) so was wondering if anyone has rescued rabbits in the past, and any common problems to look out for?

just want to know what im getting ymself into

thanks
lee

I take in bunnies to name a few. I have had nasty aggressive bunnies, wry neck (think this is how it is spelled) is something I have seen too. As I am a mug who openly admits I will take your animal and treat it myself if it is sick most people really do take advantage but I would rather pay then let the animal suffer due to some peoples lack what ever you want to call it. But to be honest most are just really nice when given the chance. I have one keepy who is just the most amazing bunny. I fell inlove and could not move him on. I take both sexes and off they go to get the op. It is inexpensive and also ensures the bunnys can have a good life and then both sexes can play together with no little surprises a month later. Even hormonal females will try to copulate. I think the biggest problem is bad diet & nails, but they do come round, even the nippers. I think you are doing a very good thing. Let me know how you get on. Hugs all the way from one animal nut in Ireland

awwww, well i think you should be congradulated for what you do, it is really good! can i ask how much your vets charges for the "chop" lol i enuired and it was 60 pounds! i supose its worth it, just didnt expect it to be that much

i wouldnt be moving these on, would be permanent home with me. one of mine now was rescued, he is the most adorable rabbit ever, he follows me everywere, and if you stand still he humps my foot he is funny! the dog is terrified, she was lying still one day and he started humping her!

thanks for the advice, will get the runs built this week, and see were it goes from there.

in a few weeks when my GCSE's are finished i will be a volenteer at a local sanctuary, so will take any bunnies they have

thanks again, helped a lot! and keep up your great work! if only there were more people like you!

thanks, lee

Hey Lee,

My vet does the bunnies for me for around 50euro. Maybe I spend soooo much money there I get a discount, a bit like Iceland, buy one get one free . It is worth it if you have a young male as it does change their temperaments and females can be real funny too when they get hormonal.

I have to say I think you are doing a very good thing but don't become a mug like me and take all the sick & dying from people who do not care and think ah well it's only an animal. I started taking pictures of cruelty cases now. I get few bad ones but I am now going to document every single last one. I did get a really bad one last week. The bunny has since been put down but the poor thing. She was so skinny I was afraid of braking her rib cage when I first tried to pick her up as she made a move and I hadn't realised just how bad she was. Then I saw the cause of her pain, her hind leg at some stage had been de-gloved. The tissue and nerves had died and the paw was mummified and bones fully exposed. I was almost sick and the look in her eyes made me have to fight back the tears. I was all for the leg to come off and keep her as a disabled bunny but she was too far gone and after two days on meds and pain killers she shed even more weight so she was put to sleep as we could do no more. I wanted to go and punch the lady who had her and no one will do anything as she is 'only a rabbit'.

I do not want to post the pic as it is graphic but some times it makes me sick to think what people do to their 'beloved pet'

awwww, im so sorry to hear this!

and we are basically know as a rescue, apart from the snakes and one horse we havent bought one animal, we rescued 2 rabbits, 3 horses, 9 parrots (only 4 now) 1 snake, 1 dog and probably more

its heart breaking to see what people can let happen to animals, and not be bothered! my rabbits are spoilt rotten to be honest, they have 2 story hutches, and 10 foot x 4 foot runs but they are worth it, seeing them running around having fun is hilerious!

good luck in the future, you are a credit to people, if only everybody cared as much as you! but as you say, the only responce you will ever get is "they are just rabbits"

best wishes
lee

Hi. When i used to rescue rabbits (and i still do sometimes) most of the time they came in a very bad condition. If you get any sick make sure you quartine them because i recued one and it had this thing that the breeders called "jelly belly" (or something like that) and it passed it on to a few other rabbits and they had to be put down. Sometimes it can be hard but its rewarding in the end! Good luck!!

something to look out for hun is teeth
i rescue rabbits and have had a lot with bad teeth
make sure you have a good pair of snippers and chop any that ingrow or grow too long
the dribble they produce can make chest and neck hair fall out and go extremely red and uncomfortable
no amount of cream can solve it

unfortunately a lot of rabbits suffer from this
and it is horrible to see

Our sanctuary takes in rabbits. All ours are spayed or castrated. It so makes a difference to their tempermants. I think that buns are one of the most abused pets.Often kept in a tiny prison for their whole life. Its dreadful that these tiny hutches are even sold let alone used. Good on you for wanting to rescue rabbits
