Default Doberman info

I would really like a Doberman in the future and have done some reserch on them. I'd like to hear if any of you guys have one what their like.

Basically i want one as they look nice (but i want an undocked one). I want a dog thats easy to train. A dog that would protect you but is good with his family. Good with other animals. Needs moderate excersize but constant affection. I like larger breeds and love the choc colour in Dobermans.

Any info greatly apprechiated.

Hi I never owned a dobe but I used to instruct at a dobe and rottie training class. Superb dogs but important to socialise with other dogs and they like to play chase - ie you chase they run away. A lot of them have a bit of a recall issue - not a really independant type like nordic breeds but just seem to think its funny to almost come back to you then leg it.

i used to have one & my ex still has her but she's getting on a bit now. she's a wonderful dog, always been great with our son & when i've been round with my dog, she's not shown any agression to him. she's always been quite a handful when on the lead though. but that might be the start in life she had. me & ex rescued her when she was 6 months old (always regret not taking her sioster as well but that's another story) and she's never been on a lead before we got her. 6 months is pretty old to start introduncing a coller & lead to a dog.

oh and she wans't docked.

as long as your strict and show it whos boss then you should be fine. i have dobes and have always had them, and have found they need reminding constantly that you are top dog. They need a lot of socialising though, so the training classes idea is great.

Theyre so loving, and not vicious or nasty like they are made out to be, they just like to guard and protect their owners. Mine will bark at anyone who comes near our house, but if we invite anyone in, she'll bark then leave them alone.

so basically, as long as you have the time, patience, and are good at being strict but fair, then you should get on fine with a dobe! They also love long walks and going for runs, but as someone said earlier, their recall is usually rubbish!

hope this helps a bit

Be dominant and assertive and you'll be fine. Dobes are GREAT pets and absolutely amazing animals. They have brilliant personalities.

Lots of exercise and social meetings though! (Well.. Same with most dogs)

They will probably lick you to death though.

they sound perfect my dad used to breed german sheppards for the police so ive been brought up treating dogs old school style none of this tinkerbell in my handbag .

I dont mind being strict with a dog i just want one that will learn and do as its told e.g sit means SIT. Whilst at the same time lie down on the sofa in front of heros lol.

They seem good for trainning any tips as this would be an important part of our lives i want to go to classes as much as possible to socialize both of us lol.

Their recall problems would you advise never off a lead then. Ive experienced that they are tuggers do they get over this or is it just something you have to put up with

A dobe sounds perfect for you then!

i've always lt them off the lead, they come back most the time but usually run off if they see something more interesting. As long as it is socialised well, you should be fine. Just be careful of other people as if they see a big dobe bounding towards them they usually take it wrongly and thats where you get problems! my dobe has never done anything more than bark at people, but rumours always seem to start and now half the village wont even talk to us!
