Default Wild Starling - Help

Hey guys
Ok so we were in town yesterday and brought a starling home with a broken wing. He survived the night, and we're planning on splinting the wing with some gauze and medi-tape before taking him to the vet (as we couldn't get a lift last night)

Have read a lot and have experience with wild birds and have him on moist dry dog food. Diet and living conditions im fine with.

And we are planning to release him when he's better and bone repairs.

BUT
wanted to know the what if's on keeping wild birds
if i take him to the vet, will they put him down because it'll take "too long" and be "too stressful" to keep him around human contact...

my answer to this would be he's a town bird and is used to being fed by humans but weary enough to back off.. (we don't handle him (don't want to get him used to being grabbed).

and judging by his overnight stay and his overall character, he is not stressed and is quite enjoying the recoup!

however
i wanted to know the laws on keeping birds for a long period of time, back in the day we had pigeons and hedgehogs coming out of our ears but i'd imagine the law has changed somewhat.

what im basically wanting to know is where to stand my ground with the vet if they say it'll take too long and he'll just die due to stress. because i have the time and patience and knowledge to care for him. i just want to know if i can? if you understand.

also out of interest, ive seen a lot of people with pet crows etc.
we have an aviary we could tailor to a starling
if we thought he would be better in captivity and would be picked off due to wing imperfections etc..
where would we stand on keeping him?

sorry for the long post
im uneducated on the laws these days, as we used to just splint wings, treat wounds and let them go when i was young! but im sure there's much more to think about these days

also this is not me talking as a rescuer
this is me talking as a person who found an injured starling by a bus park and didn't want him to get squished.

cheers in advance guys
xxx

Think you should be alright babe.

I'm doing a NatDip in Animal Management and as far as I'm aware there's no legislation that would prevent you keeping him.

The main one's DEFRA but thats mainly to prevent you raiding nests for eggs, protecting endangered species or killing them.

There's also the Wildlife & Countryside act, but again that's more about raiding nests for the specific purpose of a pet, what you want to do is just the same as what a charity or rescue centre would do so you'll be fine.
So long as you have its best welfare in heart you should be ok,
plus they'll be happy with waxworms and mealies too

Good Luck Love

hey guys
Stalin the starling lasted a night and a day
went to splint his wing this afternoon and he was belly up
have buried him in the happy meal box we took him home from town in
think he just wasn't strong enough
he munched a lot of wax worms and cat food last night when we got in
so at least he had a good meal

thanks to everyone who replied
thought he'd make it
but sadly didn't

quite a bit upset
but might be useful if someone posted a sticky on this topic on a part of the forum
as it'd be useful for people to know i think

thanks again to everyone
