i have a similar story, i has a syrian, bit me, fucked the nerve ending in my fingers, couldnt feel the end of that finger for a long long time,w as near 3 years, so needless to say, the only reason that son of a biatch got of my hand was because it went sky diving into a wall!! it did deserve it! thought i was going to have my finger chopped off!

If she has babies then she is obviuosly feeling protective.
Rats are very very friendly, but from lots of the comments it is sounding like they always bite and are quite horrid. This is Not true.

Rats are probably the tamest small furry around, i have guineas, rabbits, hamster and rats and the rats are by far the most confident and friendly; although none of my furries have ever bitten.

I go along the lines of:
Don't wake up unless necessary (how do you feel when people wake you up?)

Always talk to them as you approach them (rats and hamsters have shocking eyesight, black eyed rats can only see 9 inches in front of them and red eyed rats only 6 inches)-This gives them a warning to your approach ( i know their snse of smell is very good but your voice is reassuring)

Don't feed these critters through the bars, if you do they associate your hand with tasty treats and will usually 'test' nibble as they think it contains goodies.

I know most of you probably know this and follow this but rats are great pets. My 4 are the laziest boys around, they are all brothers that i fostered as part of a large rescue last year and couldn't part with them, as i'd had them since 4.5 weeks old.

Sorry if this seems like a rant but i'm a huge small furry advocate.

I mostly agree, I don't really like rats much, but out of all the ones I have seen and held, there has only ever been one really agressive rat.
