Default Cats and bad teeth...

As you know ginger (older cat) now has just one tooth!
Zingi - his teeth are turning yellow ... anyway...
is there a way of brushing, without actually brushing their teeth?...
beacuse of his ''medical'' problems he cannot eat muchies etc, which could and would help to clean them.

he has FUS and so far sticking to one cat food, he is fine, otherwise he will go on a perscription cat food, which my dad cannot afford. But anyway with him sticking to this one food, and not changing he seems to be doing ok for now ... which is brilliant... but im just worried about his teeth, or am i just being OTT beause of what happened to ginger.

You could get dentistry done on him, that would probably be the best thing but it costs quite a bit

Could you try giving him raw chicken bones that have been stripped of most of their meat - wingbones are probably best, or necks - which will help keep his teeth clean?

You could also try giving him some Hills Oral Care.

If he can't eat dried food, a few pieces of this each day as a treat shouldn't cause his FUS to flare up, but it might help his teeth. The kibble is larger than normal dried cat food and has a different texture, which breaks up when the cat bites into it. Oral care is designed not to break into pieces, but to 'scrub' your cat's teeth as it chews into it.

There is also a prescription only version of it, which works even better, but you would have to get that from your vet.

Other than that you can buy a toothbrush and clean his teeth, but it's hard if you don't start them early enough but, as Shell has suggested, you can use Logic without actually brushing and it does still work. Here's a link to buying it on line - it may work out cheaper Logic Oral Hygiene Gel: Enzymatic Dog & Cat Toothpaste 70g - £4.49 : Vet UK for Healthy Happy Pets

If you are interested and believe in homeopathy, then Fragaria is your answer. Fragaria is actually strawberry and it is believed that it softens and prevents the build up of tartar on the teeth. I bought the liquid version and just put it in their drinking water.

Well, you can buy a special cat toothbrush, but I just bought the smallest size baby toothbrush and it worked fine for me!

There is no question that if he would let you brush his teeth, that would be better than anything else - the other options are for those cats who won't allow their teeth to be brushed.

Cats who react to catmint usually love minty toothpaste - our Cadbury sits on the bathroom window sill while Barry has his shower so he can lick the toothbrush after he's cleaned his teeth!! His father was the same and was actually included in a cat book about 12 years ago with the story of him pinching his owner's toothbrush!!
