Does she have a pond for it? You can buy them, usually from markets or poultry farmers or simialr, but they are often designed to be egg layers and kept on farms etc. like chickens are, I think one would certainly need a nice pond.

all need land and water area, and are social animals so ideally you'd need more than one, or other poultry etc.

they make a lot of mess, noise, will ruin your lawn, so will probably need a large aviary type set up or the duck/hen runs, if you don't want the little quacker to mess up your garden !

however, i think ducks are awesome, and if you'd like more info on some places to get them (of various breeds) drop me a pm as i don't think you can post site links here?

messy dirty and noisy things ducks. You cannot have just one. They need regular worming and delousing just like chickens. They need access to water which they will splash in and sh1t in, soon turning it into a disease ridden stinking mess and the ground around it. The crap smelly liquid poops about 10 times a day and need somewhere dry and secure to be shut in at night.
Why do people have a fascination to make 'pets' out of livestock? You also need to check your deeds to see if there is a covenant banning you from keeping livestock or, if in rented, check with the lease agreement.

If you get the duckling as a day old hatchling it will imprint on you (well your mother) and be extremely tame, but it will need artificial heat for the first week.

We had 2 as pets when I lived in Hampshire, which we got as day old hatchlings and the lived in the viv, while the snakes lived in the airing cupboard for a week.

However, if you don't have running water, i.e. a stream in your garden they will make a heck of a mess in any pond you give them and will sh*t all over your garden.

They are cute little critters but boy, can they make a mess!!
