Have been rescueing rodents, predominantly hamster's for a while now, and today we had our first death.
One of four hamster's that came in, sadly died due to "wet tail" a stress related disease earlier today. I came home to find the poor thing cold in his bed, after struggling to keep him alive. Wet tail in most cases is fatal, but can be avoided by making sure your hamster is well entertained, has a good diet, and is cleaned out regularly. Hamsters suffering from Wet Tail often die from dehydration rather than from Wet Tail itself, or they simply refuse to eat or drink. Also, because of the severe diarrhoea Wet Tail can lead to rectal prolapse where the intestine is pushed outside the body through the anus. Luckily for "Little One" he didn't go through that, and he was quick to hit the hay so to speak. For more information on Wet Tail itself, and the "facts" i would advise you having a look at: Welcome to the British Hamster Association Web Site R.I.P "little one" you will be sadly missed.
