Default Thinking about getting some chickens. Good idea or not?

hi all.

im thinking about getting some chickens to keep in the garden. mainly for eggs and as pets, plus ive seen some really wierd/cool looking breeds about.

as im not allowed to keep reps anymore (again) as the council dont approve i thought about starting a chicken project i.e breeding them and cross breeding them to see which provide the best looks, eggs and maybe meat but i might not be able to go through with the last one.

i have an 8ft by 12ft dog pen which i could easlily convert into a chicken run if its big enough and how many chickens could i keep in that sized run?

If you plant them fairly close together, you could get quite a few in that space!!!

If the council wont allow you to keep reps, are you sure they will let you keep a few Chickens in the garden? In a run that size you could keep 4-6 large breed Chickens or 8-10 Banthams quite happy in there.

there is a family up the road from me who keep chickens and they havent had any problems from the council. i was told i cant keep reps due to the neighbours may be "worried" about them.

i think its ok as long as i dont get a male and i keep the run clean

Chickens only stink if you dont keep them clean...same as any pet really, I have 20 hens and they dont smell one bit as i keep the coop well clean and i have never really found them messy either.

if you aren't allowed to keep reptiles, there is a good chance your council won't allow you to keep livestock in the garden so check your tenancy agreement before you get them.
Leave the breeding and cross breeding to people who know. You would need a cockerel and that's bound to upset neighbours as they crow as early as 4am.
There are already plenty of different looking breeds without producing mongrels. You will also have to be prepared to kill the cockerels which hatch as I have trouble even finding homes for show winning cockerels. You will have no chance with crossbred ones.
But check your tenancy agreement first.
If you are allowed and want to talk chickens with me, by all means get in touch. I've kept, bred, shown and eaten chickens for around 30 years.
