Unhappy GSD Tragedy

On Thursday night my 2 year old GSD boy Mitch was a bit Unsettled and panting. Nothing pacific just a bit odd. Checked him over but no bloating or tender tummy. After about an hour he got worse and staggered which is when I rang the Emergency vet. He died before I even got half way there. We got the vet to do a pm as young healthy dogs do not die like that. His findings where: Compromised spleen and other internal organs Blood filled chest and fluid round the heart. He says that he was probably born with a weak valve to his heart that has been slowly leaking and eventually ruptured. An aneuryism(spelling)He just went to sleep. This dog has always been healthy and fit, he used to play with frisbees and swim. May I saythis problem wasnt even discovered when he was vaccinated. RIP Mitch my handsome boy. I miss you so much. You have left a huge hole in our family and I still cant come to terms with you not being by my side. Karla my remaining GSD keeps searching for you. I hope you are with Ginny who was Put to Sleep a short while ago aged 13.5 years. I feel robbed you to should have had a long happy life

Oh bless, very sorry for your loss. I know how hard it is to lose a dog.. When my 16 year old Dalmation was put to sleep it broke my heart

Rest In Peace Mitch ♥

I used to breed GSD's and had a similar thing happen to one of my 10 yr old stud boys. He too died in the back of the car on the way to the vets pm showed Spleenic tumor and belly full of blood, unfortunately its one of those things that you can't test for or even have an idea its a problem until they've gone. My old chap had undergone his annual physical and vaccinations 2 days before he died.

I'm sorry for your loss but at least you little chap didn't suffer and is at peace now.

Oh Shell! How absolutely bloody awful for you, especially so quickly after losing Ginny! You must be devastated!

I am so very, very sorry for you - wish there was something that I could do, but I'm thinking of you!

Yes, that's the tragedy! If you know your pet has had a good life and more or less seen it out to its natural end, there is a comfort there. There is little comfort when that pet is young and hasn't had a life!

My Havana who died when he was 3 had congenital cardiomyopathy, but like Mitch, this was never picked up during his primary vaccination check-up, or at any of his booster check-ups until he was almost 4 when the vet picked up a heart murmour during a visit to the vet. He had x-rays and we found the cardiomyopathy on the x-ray and he had an ecg and was put onto a special low salt diet. I thought he would still live for years, as many cats with cardiomyopathy do, but he died just about 4 weeks later from heart failure and I was gutted.

I can't even think about how I would be feeling if this was my GSD so my full sympathy is with you. His life may have been cut short but I'm betting it was a damn good one at least.
