Default multi mammate help needed!!

had our first litter of multis, 3 in total, but only found them when they had fluff on them and were runnin about! worried about them i took them out and asked friend advice. she said they should be fine in with mum but be warned multis are notorious for eatin their first or second litter. anyway they were away from mum 1 maybe 2 nights then i put them back. alls been well for about a week then one got weak and died, then another went weak and died lastnight, i thought maybe id taken them out too soon but when put them back they still suckled on mum so thought everything was fine. last night the last baby was fine and today ive gone to check them and found a head and one leg, she'd eaten its lower half! why has she done this so late on? could it have been ill and she knew? or could my intervention have made her eat them?

my worry now is she has a litter of 4 in with her that shes just had, about 2 weeks ago. they are still immobile pretty much in the nest, have got fur on them but havent opened their eyes, shes still lettin them suckle but when is the right time to take them away from mum? if i leave them in with her will she continue t eat them? im at a loss and totally gutted, why is nature so cruel!

all help would be greatly welcomed

Cat x

Leave the babies until they are at least 4 weeks old, I never personally had any trouble leaving them until mum had had her next litter then removing them.

Yup,

I agree with Ally, leave the litter alone.

Some females are, unfortunately, not always 'cut out' to be good Mothers & they always consume their young.

There are, also, young Mums' who are over protective & will eat young if they believe they are in danger.

Your female may be o.k. with this 2nd litter if you do not disturb her too much.

A quick & efficient 'spot clean' of the cage with fresh water & food, is all that is required for a few days.

thanks guys

i didnt maul the babies much, but i panicked and moved them cos i thought they had been born a while by the looks of them and thought she might eat them. when i put them back i found she had had another littler!!! but still i left them in and they didnt seem to bother the other litter. alas there are now just the 4 of the litter left which i am going to leave well alone. i had no idea she was even pregnant the first time round then saw she was again when we found the babies. these 2 arent the greatest to handle so we didnt really handle them, just fed, watered and cleaned out so perhaps thats why we didnt spot the babies. the male has now been seperated from the female, as i think she needs a well earned rest!

thanks again all
