Default ferrets

hi
my ferret had her kits just over a week ago.
when i took the first pic there was between 10-12.
this is her first liter and mine 2. she is producing lots of milk, and eating very well, I give her complete excel ferret food, liver, kidney, beef and some scrambled egg. Also cat milk.
I am down to 6 kits now is it usual to loose so many.
I have not touched them and not desturbed the nest box.
They grow so fast to.

thanks All
Tom

I don't know exactly how true it is but from what I have picked up on forums it seems jills have 8 nipples and each ferret takes on "it's own" nipple so I hear that this is the reason litters over the size of 8 always seem to lose a few, now I have heard of two jills give birth recently who came into a rescue pregnant, one has lost 4 babies and one 3 so yes it seems to me they do lose a few, I guess the bigger the litter the weaker the babies, if she only had three I bet all three would be huge, then again maybe the bigger they are the harder they are to pass and you might lose some that was also

you should not count the kits until they are 4 weeks old that is when you are guarenteed they will not be culled the mother will remove any runts etc... i have found if you have 2 jills due around the same time keep them together as they will share nursing duties and you will find more of the litter will survive.

now stop counting!! its nature im afraid
