What a shame yet another parrot ends up rehopmed because of behavioural problems. I keep lots of amazons and adore the species but mine have been trained from the start to understand boundaries and I watch to ensure that in the breeding season, any aggression doesn't get directed at me as I respect them and stay out of their way if they are feeling'antsy'. So, what sort of nice new home do you think will take on this highly aggressive and non talking parrot? TBH the parrot sanctuary would probably be the best place for it otherwise it'll end up passed from home to home to home as each owner cannot cope with the aggression and each wants to ensure they don't lose money ont he deal. ![]() a wild caught orange winged amazon on it's own is probably worth £50. The cage value depends on what sort of cage it is. |

Hey Fenwoman I totally agree with you. He has had the bird about 4 years and has been ok with men up to now.I hate caged birds anyway and think the least we can do is give an aviary and others of the same species. Any we get given at the Sanctuary go to the Parrot people. We have had a Rosea(sp)Cockatoo and a gorgeous little Ruples parrot. We do have a couple of Quakers in an Aviary at our Sanctuary but if I had my way they would be in a Flock situation too. I am furious with Arran as Ive already said it will be passed round as its not the friendliest bird or the most vocal. Arran went abroad and has come back with a tan so I think this is what has upset George. The only questions I am asking are the ones he asked me. I am desperately trying to change his mind but he is a very stubborn annoying person(aged 30 yrs)

I agree with Fenwoman.
Male Amazon parrots can behave like this for weeks. It is nothing personal, just hormonal. He should return to his normal self soon enough. In the meantime, careful handling should be done. BTW, why isnt this parrot ever confined to a cage? Parrots that are given the run (or fly!) of the house with no 'in' time in their cage more often than not develop aggression problems. Of course, I am not saying keep this parrot in its cage for hours & hours on end. Just that it is normal & healthy for a parrot to be expected to spend some time on their own in their cage.

can you ask him which species of amazon it is and if it is captive bred or wild caught etc? If he is determined to make money from it I might be able to advice what he should ask. However since it is unsexed and aggressive, he won't get as much for it as a hand tame and talking one. Not giving any boundaries, cage time etc is as bad as having a pet dog and just allowing it to run about outside where it pleases, never train it etc.

I had this exact problem when my HR CB hit 2 years old and we went on a 2 - week holiday. He's a black headed caique (similar in nature to the amazons - just smaller but with big attitude and savage beaks lol).
When we got back he hated me (and I was his favorite and bonded person up till then). I think then it was a mixture of "you left me I'm gonna make you pay" combined with the hormones just kicking in, as he still has these hormonal rages from time to time and would like to take my eye out (and others) if he could. I also thought of giving him up but coudn't do it. I rang all the parrot helper people I knew and eventually was advised to get him stick trained. So this is what I do now and he still has his hateful moments but is normally a cuddly bird now (depending on time of day and especially in the evening). He's 9 now and I think he is calming down a little as he's gotten older. |
