Default Nasty wound - what to do URGENT

Have posted this on a poultry forum too, but I know this site gets a lot more posts and I need a quick answer.

Came home from work and god knows how but one of my hens is missing a toe! Quite a bit of blood loss and an open wound.

What can I do to make sure it's clean and infection-free? Should I bandage to stop pecking from the others or leave open to heal quicker?

Is there anything I can use for tonight that I might have in the house or can get from the supermarket before it closes at 9?

She's ok in herself but I'm worried about keeping it clean

The first thing i can suggest is bathing the foot in saltwater, it will clean the wound and help the blood to coagulate, after that i wouldn't know....

...good luck, hope she is better soon :-(

With budgies i used cobwebs on the wounds as it stops the bleeding. Sounds wierd but does really work.

Thanks everyone

Bathed her foot in salt water and after that it seemed to heal up very well. Picked up some purple spray today so I've got some ready for the next incident!

I did keep her indoors for a while but she just wouldn't settle, and so I put her back in with the others in the nest box ratehr than on the perch. This morning her balance seems much better and it's scabbed over with no signs of pecking.

Panic over

Glad she is ok.
The thing with hens is that if they peck at feet acciedentally and draw blood they do go into a frenzy as the blood seems to make them go wild.

Stopping the blood is the first thing to do and the purple spray is a good antiseptic.
We have hens, bantams. quails and ducks, the ducks are defintiely the most placid of the bunch. The quails are quite bloodthirsty if given half the chance and the hens are a bit bossy!

Be very careful where you spray the purple spray as it stains - have a dog with a purple paw who got in the way lol

The thing which I thought as a poultry breeder and keeper is, how did she lose her toe? You need to be looking for sharp objects around the poultry yard. Are you putting poison down for rats? It's pretty bad this year and rats will chew toes and legs off chickens.
I've been baiting for about 2 weeks now and am finding loads of dead rats about, which means that 4 times as many are dying underground.
