Well I've been thinking about getting a rabbit for a while, and I just fell in love with one which was HUGE, but which they'd just labelled "giant house rabbit". I'd never dream of buying anything from there anyway, but I just wondered, as I'm pretty clueless about rabbits, what the breed is likely to have been.

OH got a bit OMG at the price tag of £120. Does that sound steep?

One last question ... house rabbits and cats. One of the reasons I was tempted is that it was actually much bigger than my cats so would presumably not be in any danger from them. That's a principle that seems to apply with my hens. Does anyone keep house rabbits and cats together?

Thanks

Any animal in Pets at home willl be overpriced. A lot of the large rabbits are crossbred ones too which you can buy anywhere from around £35. Someone local to me is selling 'giant rabbits' for £15 as people don't want them becuae of the need for a huge shed to live in. I was at Mill lane pet centre this morning getting some lamps and the owners have a Flemish giant purebred rabbit in there who is huge and lovely. She says he is off to Linton zoo next year on loan as a stud wabbit for their 2 girlies. I'd love a massive rabbit like 'the general'.
£120 sounds like mega rip off money to me.

That'll be the very same rabbit then because I saw it when we nipped into Cramlington to do a bit of shopping! Thought the price seemed daft and that's sad because it probably means the poor thing will be there for ages.

I'm very tempted but I'd better finish twiddling with the new marine tank first, and then I can start thinking about some sort of big indoor housing. Will start looking for breeders round here though.

Thanks everyone

They buy them in from simons rodents don't they? and his prices are high.
I remember many years ago when I worked for petsmart, that he brought loads of New Zealand Whites and Califorians which he sold to pet smart at £10 each so the boss had bought laods to cover Easter, couldn't understand when I went a bit mad at her. He'd actually got them at50p and £1 each from a Rabbit Meat Farmer as his own rabbits hadn't breed enough to cover the Easter rush!

Lots didn't sell, mainly due to me giving correct advice on the size hutch they would need. They are very docile in nature I'll give them that, but most people back then wanting pet rabbits didn't want the bigger breeds.

Now with more people having House Rabbits, more people are happier with bigger breeds and certainly with newspaper articles saying how amazingly huge they are. So they jump on the bandwagon and get big bunnies in at huge prices to cash in on the current craze.
They do have a huge mark up that they put on animals. so if the rpice they paid to get them, if high, will mean the sale price will be huge!
Go direct to a breeder. You'll know the age, get to see parents etc and get the proper info on the breed.

Oops, do you know I didn't even notice that you were in Northumberland. It was about 3 weeks ago that I was in and it was there then! I was flabbergasted at the price!! I re-homed my British Giant from a breeder who was looking to re-home him because he wasn't big enough at 16lb

Why thank you! Here's Harry with my second Sussex Gold - they're fabulous rabbits!! This one I took from the breeder cos he had splay legs, so not a long expected life span and she wanted someone who would let him live in the house and care for him. It was as if Harry knew he had something wrong with him and he followed him around and looked after him.

To be honest, apart from my first dog, bought when I was 16 and didn't know much better, I've never bought an animal from a pet shop. I've always gone to a breeder to buy any animals I want and I would always recommend others to do the same.

Persnally I would not buy live stock from P&H as I do not want to support the trade or breeders. far too many rabbits that need rehoming. We have four French Lops which we obtained from a rescue/rehoming centre. All you pay for is a donation and most rabbits would have had their operations and injections done by the centres.

As to giants being aggressive, this does depend on the individual's temperment but if they have had their operations done then they are normally much calmer.
