Default APH pregnant!

Hi guys, Ive just found out that my female APH is expecting!!!!! I know how to look after them as pets but have never bred these before??? Any tips on what to expect? Do I need to separate my male and female? Do I need to do anything special with the babies or will mum do everything??? I know what I'm on about when it comes to breeding reptiles but this is a first for me with APH!!!! Thanks guys, any help will be much appreciated!

Congrats!

I would seperate the male ASAP, in my experience they do not do that well in groups and the male can cause undue stress and can also consume the babies. Any extra stress may cause mum to abandon or eat the litter too, especially if it's the first, so avoid handling or making any loud or different noises, especially in her last week, and in the first week of the babies birth.

She will know how to look after them, I leave mine alone for a week and then go in for a sneak peak, giving them a cursory handle/checkup at 2 weeks and then handling daily from 3 weeks, I don't know how other breeders do it though.

Take your Male out "NOW" you should never have mixed sex pairs together, The presence of the male brings the female into cycle so if you are correct and she is pregnant he will still want to mate and your female now pregnant she will not appreciate his attentions and can bite him so you'll end up with and injured hedgehog as well.
I'll PM you what you need to do as it will be easier as there quite a lot for you to take on board. I am very annoyed you decided to breed any animal without looking into its needs and deciding if it is the right thing to do. I will help you out but only to save you the distress of finding a canablised litter and a sick and stressed Mum.

we've been really lucky with ours that both mothers have been good mums and let us handle them from a week old without causing any harm to the babies though some hogs arent as good, if you need any help just give us a pm, n we'll help where possible

good luck

Firstly, thanks for your PM, female is doing fine, eating like a pig and the male has now been removed.
I never wanted to breed these, I was actually sold 2 females which has ended up as male and female. These were bought purely as pets, not for breeding so this has come as quite a shock to be honest!

Here's a picture that I did for my website, if anyone ever has any problems identifying hedgehogs in the future, please feel free to pass it on to any new owners to avoid mishap, they are easily sexable from a week old.

Reptilelover has said its a surprise and she thought she had two females everyone can get sexing wrong i know people to get rat weaners wrong so maybe instead of getting on her back, people give advice so the mum (and when there arrive) babies get the best care needed

I did just that, PM'd the info she needed for now, and hopefully she now has a good idea of when her litter will be due. I've also asked she keep in touch with me so we can ensure when the hoglets arrive we can make sure the mum and the litter get the correct care.
