Default New kitty...any advice welcome!

Today we collected our new Kitten, Lily. We're thrilled to bits with her, she's nice and healthy and absolutely lovely!

The only thing I wanted to query was settling her into our house.

Currently we have another cat who is all out hissing at the mere sound of the kitten. Which is as was expected! These things take time of course.

Then we have a one year old Staffy who has no problem at all with the kitten, except that she's about as delicate as a ton of bricks, she appears to have spooked the kitten with her lumbering ways and she now hisses and growls at her!

So all in all we have a bit of work to do!

Currently we're keeping the kitten seperate in our bedroom as our house is open plan, she's settle in just fine, is eating and using the litter tray. Then we're just bringing her out once is a while to be carried around (not put down) to get the other animals, and the kitten, used to each others presence.

Any further advice, tips or suggestions warmly appreciated. Also any past experiences would be good

Thanks all.

That kitten is absolutely gorgeous.... *melts*
Sounds to me like you're doing the right things really, it just takes a little time and a watchful eye. Before you know it the kitty will be ruling the roost!
Good luck.

If you have a dog crate set it up for the kitten downstairs and when you are about put her in it so she can be viewed and sniffed by the other 2 until they all become used to each others presence without her coming to any harm.Very cute kitten may I add

What a gorgeous little kitten I wanna take her home for my cat. :P

And as for getting them used to eachother, do as you are doing for a little bit at the begining, also bring the kitten right to the other animals, and while holding her, let them sniff the kitten. I always do so with our new animals. Try to show your staffy that she is delicate, and that she has to be careful. Our boarder collie nearly ripped off a kittens head that we got, because he used to be used for hunting, and the kitten was small, so he thought it was a ground hog. We would allow him to see the kitten with our watchful eye, and any false moves he would get a swift tap on the nose. He finally learnt though.

With the other cat, it may not completly except the kitten. With my cat Sylvester, when we get a kitten(can only ever be a female) we will put it with him right when we get it home because he LOVES kittens, and will start bringing her around everywhere, to show the house. If the kitten is small enough he will even carry her. With yours, it may not be the same, yours may also be territorial.

when we brought Beau home we let him and my other cat and dog out althogther. the kitten and dog are best friends and Beau will always come running up to the front door to greet the dog when he's been out. they even sleep together in Gizmo's dog crate. they play together well and even play fight as they'd do in their own litter.....never seen a cat and dog get on so well.

Salem, my older cat still (after 4 months) has not taken to him, she doesn't attack him, just sits and growls whenever he's in the same room.
she's never been the most friendly cat, but think she resents the fact Beau follows me everywhere and hates being left alone.

we never kept them separate, and luckily have had no problems

You're doing exactly what we did with every new kitten we brought into our home. When we weren't there we kept the kitten in our bedroom and then when we came home we brought the kitten downstairs to the living room to get all the other cats and the dog used to it. It didn't take more than a week to get them all settled in.

Shell's idea of a crate or pen of some kind is a good idea if you have one or can borrow one, failing which I think what you are doing is right. It just takes time and patience.

Edit: sorry forgot to mention that is one cute kitty!!
