we have been breeding eng bull terriers for 7 yrs now,
& its hard work belive me ,
you have to know the outlay first
getting your bitch in tip top condition before she is bred,
health tested done & clear,
& then are you prepaired to hand feed the pups by bottle every two hours, as mom might not have milk for the pups or regect them,
& this is for a week - 10 days then cut down to 3-4 hour feeds,

also what about contracts, for the pups,?
we give contracts to all our new pup owners,
& one of the things is that the pups have to be re-turned to us at any point in their life should the new owner not be able to keep the pup
will you be able to take the pups back at any time if needed.

cost to paying to mate your bitch to stud usually about £300 ish,
then what if she needs a c section that about £300- £600
then raising your pups & mom
with best food, vet checks, worming ect,
usually runs into £100 S
thats before you sell the pups,
then like someone else pointed out ,
can you sell the pups ?

we usually have a waiting list for our pups before we breed then i know i have plenty of home for the pups ,
would you be willing to vet the homes that your pups are going too,
& then you know they are suitable,

my advice is if she is just a pet keep her as a pet, !!
she doesnt need to have a litter, i would spay her over the age of 18 months, not before they need time to mature,
& as already said they dont need to have a litter

You all put forward good reasons I suppose. The breeder paid a lot of money for a german stud, but unfortunately her bitch had complications and will not be able to breed again. She is not a big breeder, she does have other dogs, and she did not keep any of the pups from the first litter (which was only small, 4 of them in the end). I think the breeder is hoping for one of the pups back also.

My pup is not a great example if you ask me, her coat is too long and she's too floppy but she is only a puppy.

It is not really the money.. I have the money for vets fees, outlays. I live right next to the GSD club of Wales and have had offers already should I breed her, I have no doubt that the pups would fly out of here, perhaps I live in a very good area for it. If they didnt, well I have space and live next to 20 acres of parkland. If they came back to me it would not bea huge problem if it was just one out of a litter - if I ended up with 5 dogs coming back to me I might run out of time and space!

There are 2 of us and only one of us needs to be at the shop, meaning one of us can be at home for the pups or the mum.

But... then the vet tells me that the next season she has will increase her changes of cancer and also incontinence in old age, and thinks there are far too many dogs in the world already. I am really leaning towards just having her spayed anyway but I just don't want to regret it in the future. My other dog is already neutered and sometimes I just wish I had seen what beautiful puppies he could produce

There are all sorts of reasons to breed or not to bread most people breed to pass on very well kept genetics others as above breed for showing then there are people that breed for pets etc
Im wondering why the breeder of you GSD is trying very hard by the sounds of it to get you to breed your dog (i may be wrong)
also if you want to get her spayed your well within your rights to do so
unless she has restrictions on her papers but i dont think thats to stop her being spayed
not only that you have to think of the health of your dog and many other health test factors etc im not sure what tests are available to GSD as i have a stafford

We have a litter early in the year our girly had 5 pups but they caused nearly £500 of damage in the 8 weeks they were with us
chewing the corner of a wall for a start lol but we expected that
Why not try your local GSD breed council there must be one somewhere and get the opinions of the people that breed their GSD's
Hope it helps
