don't belive everything the vet tells you. they are not trained to deal with wildlife and often will miss simple problems because they do not know what they are looking for. we frequently pick up birds from the vets who say it is fine, just needs resting up and then can be released, only to find infections, broken wings and legs etc. on quite a few ocasions the animal that was aparently fine has droped dead within hours of comming in to us.
as a general rule, hedgehogs should not be sitting out in the open in daylight. if they are it is almost a sure sign there is something wrong. we have been having a major problem in this area with lungworm in hedgehogs this year, and many are coming in starving as a result. once you get him back, don't put him back out straight away, see what he weighs. if it is an adult it should weigh at least a 1 3/4 pounds if it is healthy. also listen for any coughing, espesualy while he is asleep.
