i've always wanted a few chickens, in a nice big run in the garden with a chicken house attached.
Are they messy? and do they stink and need cleaning out loads?

Hi.....we have kept chickens now for 2+ years, they do require quite alot of cleaning, especialy if they are in a run.....ours have a run, but are alowed out round the garden, they are ceaned every day or every other.....it only takes about 5/10 mins as all we do is remove the top layer of newspaper.
if they were kept in a run, you would need to move the run atreast twice a week....and yes their poo does smell horid!!

they will smell alot in the summer when its hot out but if you keep it clean it shouldnt and they will eat anything like flowers so if u dont want them to eat any that you got keep them away. coz owers are let lose in a big graden so there is no flowers in that part only the front so it dont look as nice.

We have a group of hand-reared chickens which roam loose outside. They have a converted shed to roost in at night, with an automatic light-sensitive door about the size of a dog flap. The shed is cleaned as needed, but they spend very little time in there awake so the mess they make is minimal.
If you have a spare incubator I would recommend having a go at hatching your own - eggs are pretty cheap to come by, we have got ours from breeders, or commercial game bird stockists in the past. If you hatch them yourself, you get to see them grow up, and they will tend to be far more sociable. Ours are happy to eat out of hands, and one will come and sit by a side door when it is hungry.
