it will effect his balence, stability and agility in flight yes. are the feathers broken, pulled out or not grown in properly yet, as this will effect how it is treated. a picture or two would realy help if you can get some.

right. thats not great news then. you will have him for quite a while. at least he is taking food from you, that is the hardest part out of the way. he will need feeding every 2-3 hours through the day. a good staple diet that I usualy use is washed cat food (to remove the jelly/gravy) mixed with a dried insect mix and exact nutrition parrot rearing formular. as mentioned before, choped up chick and mouse is also great food. hand rearing these birds is a very time consuming job, and will mean that he goes pretty much where ever you go for the next 2 or 3 months. he should moult out his damaged feathers at the end of the summer, and by that time he will also be feeding himself compleatly, although after being in such close contact with humans for so long, from such a young age, he will be dificult to release. if you are happy do do all this then I can give you any help and advice that you may need, as I have raised many of these birds, but it is not a comitment to take on lightly, so you may be better off trying to find a local rehab centre that will take him on for you. we would, but north norfolk is a bit out of your way!

no problem, I actuly have 3 kestrels at them moment as I am hand rearing a pair of orphans too. they will be released once they are old enough though.
this is Myani, my permenent kessie, in training last year.

he is now in mid moult so is not flying at the moment but is stating to get his adult feathers through.

incidently, corvids can also be trained to fly, just as you would train a falconry bird. in fact, being so inteligent, they actuly pick it up much quicker. I have trained a couple of rooks myself, and know of others who have trained crows, magpies, ravens etc. I know of ravens even being used to hunt rabbits. if all goes well with your crow/rook you may want to give it a try.

thats great news that he is still doing ok. that is the worst part out of the way now. the fact that he is feeding himself means he will be easier to release since you will be able to cut down the human contact considerably. do you have an aviary that he can go into when he is ready? depending on his age and condition he probably needs to stay inside for a little while yet though, so you have some time to find one if not.
