try and get some sprats from the local fish mongers, although they will scavenge and eat almost anything, the natural diet is fresh fish........

good luck raising the gull

any idea on species? I regualy raise herring and lesser black backs on a mix of herring, cod fillits and day old chicks. they are generaly very easy once you get them going, and soon start feeding themselves, however they are incredably messy and noisy, and you will find it hard to get rid of once it is fledged. once they are old enough, ours go outside in an enclosed yard. they will learn to fly and will come in and out for food until they are self sufficiant, however some then refuse to leave. every morning we have at least 2, sometimes as many as 6 or 7 waiting on the roof, screaming for their breakfast. one of those has been coming in every day through the summer (he goes out to sea for the winter) for the last 5 years since he was raised here. he has now brought back a mate and the last 2 years they have been building a nest on the roof.

it is pretty early in the year for him to already be fledged, they have not long started breeding. they are mobile after a couple of days and will start to wander from the nest while still fluffy. this is why we get so many in because they fall off roofs. here are a couple of pictures of some of our lesser black backs for comparison

about a week old, just started to wander off.

one we have at the moment, about 3 weeks old

a true fledgling, about 8 weeks old. he is only just starting to fly.

that would make sence. they generaly breed at roughly the same time, since they only have one clutch per year, so they should all be similar ages at the moment. yours should not be too dificult to rear, and don't worry, learning to fly is instinct, he doesn't need to be taught. you are in for a messy job though, and quite smelly too, especualy if he is on fish. do you have a secure garden? at that age, ours spend the day outside and only come in at night, which is better for them, plus it keeps the mess down. rather than taking him in, you could always ring the vets and ask if there is anyone in your area who take wildlife. if there is, they should know, as they will probably pass anything they get on to them.
