Degus are awesome pets - I had a pair up until last year. I adopted them in a tank, but built a custom climbing-oriented cage for them a few months later - as soon as you give them some space to climb and run you will see a new side to them! So I would definitely not recommend keeping them in a 2x1x1.
I had mine in a 3 x 2 x 6 - slight overkill I know, but it kept them fit and active.
You can just about see them at the bottom - one next to the branch, one on the lowest shelf.

I have also had gerbils, a pair of them or even a would go well in a 2x1x1. Mix some hay in with their shavings, they will chew it up in days, and it gives support to their tunnels - you will be amazed what they can build when it isn't constantly falling down on their heads!

Thanks. They had grown up in a 24" x 18" x 12" glass tank with no hides or anything. I used to look after them while the owners were on holiday, but the owners were terrified of them because they were aggressive and noisy. They emigrated, offered me the degus for adoption, then gave me £30 towards a new cage, as the aquarium was falling apart. I figured they had had a rough few years, but could be tamed, so I added a bit to it, and hit the nearest B&Q!! A few months later they were tame enough to sit one on each shoulder and walk round the house with them. I miss having them about, but I've got too much on at the minute to be able to get another pair. Maybe in a few years though...

Gerbils make good pets and would be better since rats are too large for that size tank.
One downfall to gerbils is you have to be careful when handling with the tail ends, as the tufts of fluff can be shed with their skin if grabbed hold of. This can cause them to lose/drop their tail ends.
They also need company so buying 2 or more is favourable.

But good things are, they are very friendly, inquistive, fun to watch, they rarely bite (something gerbils dont do and are not particually known for), they have next to no smell and so much more.
I gave mine some sand the other day to have a dust bath in.lol

Also they come in a range of great colours too! lol

Sorry if you know all this, but it's always good for other people that dont know to read.

I have two males and two females in identical set ups. My tanks are 30" long 15" high and 12" deep. As already said they make great tunnels too!
here's mine.

I wanted some of those but decided on gerbils in the end. I may be tempted at the show if anyone has them though.
I know of one person who'll probably be taking some along!!

Gerbils! I loved mine!! I used to keep them on peat from the garden centre coz it holds burrows whereas sawdust doesn't. Mine usedto make nest out of chewed up egg box, soooooooo cute!

I take it you mean wood shavings not sawdust.

My wood shavings hold well, especially mixed with hay.
I dont use peat cause i dont want them getting dirty, and there was something else i read about peat but i dont remember what it was.
I'd love to give them a natural looking set up, but they look so cute on shavings. I tend to buy the dust free ones. (or at least it's sifted off more than the other brands. lol).

omg, just found this! now thats obsessive!
