As far as i know they're not illegal but you may need a license and they have to be neutered, to cut down on breeding so they can be phased out.

The Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 states that various breeds of dog (including the Pitbull Terrier and Tosa Inu (Japanese Tosa)) may not be bred, sold, exchanges, gifted, abandoned, allowed to stray or in any way advertised to another party. Those dogs that were owned when the bill came into force (remember this is 16 years ago) were allowed to remain with their owners providing they were neutered, microchipped and walked only on a lead AND in a muzzle when in a public place. Since there are practically no dogs left from the day the 1991 Act come into force it is no longer legal to own ANY pitbull or pitbull terrier "type" dog, even if you comply to the restrictions set out above. So in short.. it is absolutely illegal to be in possession of a pitbull terrier in the UK (this does not apply to the Irish mainland) unless you have been appointed to remove the dog from another party with the express intent of having the animal destroyed (clearly this only applies to wardens/police/RSPCA and the like).
