Default Walking the dog......

Hi,

As some of you may already know I am the proud owner of a Jack Russel Terrier called Cooper (Or Coop for short!)

Well, he is currently about to turn 12 months old and we have had difficulty in calming him down when it is time for a walk.

When I go downstairs in the morning he instantly greets me with a wagging tail and barks at me cos he knows it is neraly time for a walk, I can wait ages to try to prevent the barking and tell him off etc but he will still bark persistantly, then he will sit by the door licking it until we go, he will then scream and back with excitement when we are actually walking. Usually this calms down when we are about half way down the street but as you can imagen i am at my wits end as im worried the neighbours are going to hate me.

Ive tried ignoring him, taking him to obediance classes, using different exits in the house, shouting at him, distracting him but i just cant seem to brake this habbit he has got into.

Any ideas on this really would be much appreciated.......He is such a fantastic dog but i think i need to overcome this now.

ages, when i had finished college i had a couple of weeks off work n stuff so i tried for hours during the day to ignore him but usually after about 3 hours i gave up as i came to think he would never get walked - should i have carried on ignoring him? Ive also tried shutting him in another room but as soon as i let him out of that room it starts again.

hiya, first of all, we have all done this, including me, but shouting at a dog, any dog, only says 'bark more' as they think you are barking at them. If you invest in a collor that sprays water at them when they bark, it usually very quickly stops it.

yea we trained my brothers dog from barking by using the a water gun lol...when he barked we shot him with the water gun and he would stop and sulk in his bed lol took about a month to set him straight...my brother then took him back for all of 2 months and put him in the police...wasnt happy lol....but water guns are what i would advise =]

Do afew commands in the morning such as sit and stay. Reward him with treats. I know that sounds pretty bare but he'll realise sooner or later that everything is at your pace and it's you who controls what goes on (commanding enforces this).

Treat the barking in much the same way. Teaching him the 'Quiet' command will allow you to control his barking. He will associate that when he stops barking, he will be rewarded.
Chicken and cheese are most effective I find.

I take a 500ml water bottle with the sports style cap when im walking my 2 boxers. If they misbehave or an aggressive dog approaches a quick squirt sorts it out!

My aunt used to have a bugger of a dog for this. So i did some clicker training with him. You don't have to shout, just need a bit of patience. so as ur waitin for the walk as soon as the dog goes quiet or sits down.. click n treat. totally ignore bad behaviour n praise the good. it worked for him

sorry i can't be of more help
