Default flystrike!

My female rabbit has flystrike. I dont understand as the hutch and ltter tray is always cleaned out everyday.
The other rabbit in there with her is fine, nothing on him atall.
Her bum end looks all sore and there are maggots!
Im taking her to the vet first thing in the morning, what will they do just clean it out and give me cream or keep her in???
How am I supposed to stop it happening again when they are already cleaned out once a day?!

Grr, bloody flies

She will need to have her rear end shaved completely and the damage assessed by the vet, sadly sometimes this can be incredibly dangerous for muscle tissue the maggots are literally eating her from the outside in. If its not too bad they will use a chemical to kill the maggots and you will need to keep her clean.

If its really bad they will have to sedate or anaesthetise her and remove the maggots carefully.

Perhaps you could try moving the viv to a different location if it is near something that would attract flies and then there is the netting stuff that you can buy from ebay to cover any exposed grills, that would stop them getting in there in the first place.

hi catherine

sorry to hear about your rabbit, flystrick is hard to treat if not caught soon enough, we lost a chicken to it last year, i had a quick look on google, can't find what you are ment to put on it in emergancy, it would prob be best if you gave the out of hours vet a call and ask if there is anything you can put on it till you c them, cause if left the maggots will keep burrowing in deeper

good luck

rachel

Took her to the out of hours vets anyway. They kept her in and have just rang me now. They shaved her fur off and got all the maggots out. They are keeping her in for a further 12 hours just incase of any hidden ones. She said there was a scratch which could have been from the other rabbit and they will now have to be seperate so am now looking for a home for my little guy

Good idea about that mesh Ill look into that!

Thanks everyone for replying.
