Default taken in a bat

Today a woman came into my shop with a shoebox under her arm containing a bat , she found it on her doorstep this afternoon and asked if i could take it in as she dosent want anything to do with the rspca
i think its a pipistrelle bat , what i was going to do was see if it was strong enough to fly tonight and if so id release it , but if it cant fly ill need to ring a bat sanctuary or something , has any one here have a number for a reputable bat sanctuary? ,im in Exeter , Devon and would ideally need them to pick it up as i dont drive myself. anyway heres the little dude

Thanks guys , she didnt say if it was attacked by a cat , and tbh i didnt notice that before , i just took a quick pic of it as i didnt want to disturb it to much, she said it hissed at her when she caught it to put it in the box , so hopefully thats a good sign that it has some strength in it at least
anyway thanks for the number ill give them a ring

Yup it is a good sign when they fight back, bats are amazing to hold they are warm and fluffy and their little wings feel bizarre.

Hopefully it will be fine and has just dropped for some reason i seem to recall hearing on a programme that bats cannot take off from a horizontal position they need to be vertical and warm.

How big is it and have you tried feeding it anything? If it's an adult and you've any mealworms you could give it some of those. If you think it's a juvenile or even younger (Pips are tiny anyway) you could try cutting the head off and squeezing the innards out (a dirty job, but somebody's gotta do it!). If you're thinking of trying to release it, then you should try to feed it first. It could also be dehydrated if it hasn't fed for a while. Try giving it a drink of water. If it won't lap you could try dipping a small paintbrush into the water and letting the pip lick the water off the paintbrush.

It would be better if you could release it in the area where it was found. They do eventually fly back to their own roosts, but if you release it too far away it will be very traumatic for it to find its way home.
