Default Skunks

Hey, i'm hoping to get a skunk sometime in the near future i was just wandering if anyone could give me a bit more information on there diet and any vet care they need for example what injections they need.
Also does anyone know of any breeders to get them from preferably based in Ireland but anywhere in England will do as i don't mind travelling for one!
Thanks in advance!!

The only person I know of "publically" selling skunks is Seb at Jungletalk : Jungletalk

Food:
My boy gets about 80% veg, 10% protein, 5% fruit and 5% grains.
In terms of veg they can eat pretty much everything going but I find cabbage makes them smell (perhaps I just imagine it!) and asparagus is best avoided also.

Most fruit is also on the menu though grapes are associated with liver and kidney failure and should be avoided completely. My boy loves sharron fruit, apple and berries of any kind.

Protein should be based on livefoods (mealies and locusts are always appreciated!), white meat and fish, plus yoghurt and cheese. Cottage cheese is often recommended but it makes my boy sick, so its "horses for courses" in some ways.

This isnt a definitive diet, but my lad is strong and active with a lovely coat fed in this way.
Variety is the spice of life so try lots of different and unusual fruits and veggies each week.

Vaccinations will depend largely on what your vets are willing to administer as there are no licensed skunk vaccines in the UK. Skunks are susceptible to a variety of canine and feline dieseases such as distemper and parvovirus.
Worming should also be considered - some sources suggest as often as oncea month, though any wormer containing piperazine citrate must NOT be used. I use Panacur 2.5% oral suspension.

so you don't *have* to feed them bananas then?

every skunk i've seen has had bananas in it's food bowl

and i'm severely allergic to them..

Agreed with LRR it does smell alot like wild garlic

And no you do not have to feed banana at all if you do not want to, and if you do it should be sparingly anyway. We do not feed banana at all along with grapes, asparagus, onion family and chocolate etc
