Google search has come up with quite a variation!

24 - 30 days - 1-6 per litter
24 - 26 days
Average 21 days
Roughly 1 month - average litter is 7
About 22 days
20 - 25 days
20 - 30 days
Usually about 21.

And that was only the first page - so it looks like it can be anything between 20 and 30 days - not much help I think!

I know, the books and the web pages are the same so I was hoping that someone else who keeps them and has bred them give me more of an idea.
My Jirds had a home upgrade about 2 weeks ago with 3 times the space they had before and were bonking like bunnies. Now my female is developing a little pot belly so I am hoping for the patter of tiny feet.

Ah, that's great, but it looks like you're gonna have to second guess when they will be born.

I used to breed gerbils in the 60's and they were wonderful parents, the father doing as much care as the mother. Do you know if Jirds are the same, or will you have to remove the males before the babes come along?

Apparently they love to live in family groups and dad will tolerate grown sons within the group. Mum does the raising kicking dad out of the nest until the babies are big enough to leave it then dad joins in with all the fun stuff like playing and raising hell.
They are one of the few species that self limit their colony size if they don't have enough room......I guess moving them into a 3 story chinchilla cage is what sparked the mating.

That's what I loved about the gerbils. Hamsters were a nightmare to breed, they just hate each other, except during the actual mating and then the females have to be kept separate.

I loved watching Gerald take care of his babies, he was a really good father and I just loved the whole experience.

Do update us on their progress and some photos when the babies are born would be great!
