I have pics on her PC which I am awaiting but we went onto UK Moths and the pics ont her ehave confrired it is a Elephant hawk moth caterpillar.

Can anyone throw any more info into the hat on them please?

It is a rather large species from what I can gather and the moth itself is pink and yellow- very pretty indeed.

Any help or advice is much appreciated

Nope, but try contacting Tropical Wings - that is their speciality (butterflies and moths) for info:

The guy at Tropical wings was off BUT I have just spoken to Mr Kendall of Kendall Bioresearch - what a lovely guy!

He was really helpful and has told me how to successfully pupate the caterpillar myself. They are apprently quite common although I am 27 this year and have never seen one before!!

So I will get pics up soon for you all and keep your fingers crossed that we cna pupate the little guy, now named Herbert, successfully an next spring, I can show you some pics of him freshly emerged form his pupae

I found one in my garden a couple of years ago and I'd never seen one before either.

I hope you can manage to pupate it and eventually get the moth out. I did it many years ago with some caterpillars I bought from a shop. They pupated, hatched and laid eggs, then when the eggs hatched out the next year I put the caterpillars on a nearby willow tree. It was fascinating to do.

Try it!! My kids found it all fascinating. It was years ago now, we were househunting in Hampshire and I found this little shop in Whitchurch. He had all sorts of caterpillars and pupae.

I can't remember now which caterpillars I got, I just remember they fed on willow leaves. So we brought them home and put them in a propagator. Watching them pupate was fascinating and then they came out, laid their eggs and died. Unfortunately, because they hatched fairly quickly cos of the central heating in the house and there were no willow trees in leaf yet! By then we were living in Wallop, so I phoned the shop and asked what I should feed them and he said hawthorn, so me and the kids rushed out searching for hawthorn hedges with any leaves on. Once the willow trees came out, we set all the caterpillars free - I loved the whole experience. We also bought 3 pupae, again I can't remember what they were, but they were very dark red, almost burgundy and quite big, but they never 'hatched out'. That was disappointing.
