I hope you can manage to pupate it and eventually get the moth out. I did it many years ago with some caterpillars I bought from a shop. They pupated, hatched and laid eggs, then when the eggs hatched out the next year I put the caterpillars on a nearby willow tree. It was fascinating to do.

Try it!! My kids found it all fascinating. It was years ago now, we were househunting in Hampshire and I found this little shop in Whitchurch. He had all sorts of caterpillars and pupae.
I can't remember now which caterpillars I got, I just remember they fed on willow leaves. So we brought them home and put them in a propagator. Watching them pupate was fascinating and then they came out, laid their eggs and died. Unfortunately, because they hatched fairly quickly cos of the central heating in the house and there were no willow trees in leaf yet! By then we were living in Wallop, so I phoned the shop and asked what I should feed them and he said hawthorn, so me and the kids rushed out searching for hawthorn hedges with any leaves on. Once the willow trees came out, we set all the caterpillars free - I loved the whole experience. We also bought 3 pupae, again I can't remember what they were, but they were very dark red, almost burgundy and quite big, but they never 'hatched out'. That was disappointing.
