I believe that hairless rats can have problems lactating and therefore it is not usually advised to breed them unless you had another female with a litter who could foster. Although this is not the case for every hairless female, it would be a risk i wouldn't be prepared to make. I have seen them advertised for £35 too...but I wouldn't pay that for them!! I used to breed and show rats and bred dumbos and various colours and they shouldn't be more expensive than any other rats! They are after all the same and not exactly rare. I would pay £10-15 for a rat, males and females should be the same price, as should all varieties in my opinion.

Still curious as to how much they would cost usually though.
I 've seen two on the classified, female, for £35 the pair.
How much should I be paying for boys????
I paid £25 each for mine but they where all dumbo eared and i bred mine with no problems i mean 1 naked mum had 12 and ketp all but her sister had 9 and only ketp 4 but i then i done something differnet (as i'd only done it with mice before) i bred a naked mum and a haired mum at the same time to a naked buck and gave the haired mum half the naked babies and yay all was ok as my female rats where great mums they would take on a kit at any age.

I had thought the same. I intend, either, using a haired doe or having a haired doe in with the nakeds to foster if need be.
I have Russian blue satin rex dumbo's. You don't see them up in the North East very often so they are more expensive.
I don't know if the nakeds are dumbo or not as the breeder doesn't 'know' rats. They are the only ones he has.

I'm not being asked anywhere near that for these ones so I will get them.
As above I don't know if they are dumbo or not yet. I'll find out when I see them.
My plan is that when I get naked babies I will put the does back to the father and so forth until I have a high % of nakeds.
Always having a foster mother available.

If I put a 'top eared' buck to a dumbo doe what happens with the young????

If you put a top ear male to a dumbo female you will get all top ear babies that carry dumbo as it is a simple recessive. If the male carried dumbo and the mum was dumbo, you would get some dumbo babies and the rest carriers. You won't know its a carrier unless they tell you, or you breed to find out. Its always advisable to breed carrier to dumbo as dumbo to dumbo matings, over long periods can cause smaller eyes and other "inbred" problems. I used to do the carrier x dumbo route and it seems to work well.

OK. MY other pups are dumbo x dumbo. Russian blue stain rex x champagne and Russian blue stain rex x Russian blue satin rex. According to the breeder there's no top ear or bald in them. The resultingpups are all Russian blue but I don't know the coat yet.

If the Bald one is top ear I will try him with both a top ear berkshire doe and a Russian blue dumbo doe just to see what I get.
Subsequent pups would be carriers so I can then breed back to the father????

Stephen.

I'll bring one over when I birng your dumbo's in a couple of weeks.

I got the two boys so they wouldn't be lonely until the girls are old enough to go in with them.
I'm getting a couple of females from him as well from an unrelated litter.

The rodents are going in the sheds as soon as the weather fairs up a bit but the naked mice/rats will have to stay in the house full time.

That's only 8 tubs and two tanks!!!!!!

I've never seen a rat wearing clothes, so it would be redundant to call them naked rats

Naked rats are nice looking creatures, but unfortunately they are very prone to tumours so I'd be careful. It's like any animal that has been bred to be something it's not. They all have faults and genetic diseases and disorders

i've bred naked rats... we had 3 females together to compensate for the lack of milk and to foster we had over 25 babies in that one season... crazy... only one had a defect when born... blind... but it's true anything that has been in-bred that much to get the nakedness () will have problems in the future.... we ended up selling them at £10 each just to get rid of em.
