he fights all the time -- but it gets his ears and the top of his head, no under his chin

Ouch, poor thing!

When I first bought my first Shih-tzu (I know its a dog not a cat but...) she had similar looking marks all over her back, when we touched near them, loads of fleas came out, poor thing!

Has she possibly got it caught on something? Barb wire.. sharp twigs, then kept irritating it or anything that you can think of?

Yes, it looks exactly like feline acne to me - at it a very infected stage.

Think about it! If he'd been fighting he would be more likely to have sores on his face or body, not under his chin, surely??

Also if it was fleas, it would be more likely just bits of flea cr*p. Miliary dermatitis is caused by fleas, but that would be on his body too, not just the chin.

If this is confined only to his chin, I really think it is acne.

Here's a description which might convince you!

The second photo is when the blackheads become infected and start to pustule.

"The typical lesion is a comedone (blackhead) with superficial pimples seen on occasion. This condition may progress to plugged hair follicles with secretions and ruptures deep into the layers of the skin. If this happens, hair loss and a red, swollen, and very angry looking chin may occur next. At this stage the cat becomes sensitive and often resists touching and treatment,"

And if that doesn't convince you, maybe this will:

The bottom photo is what makes a lot of people think it is a flea infection, cos the black stuff which is seeping out of the blackheads does look a bit like flea cr*p, but fleas seldom ever bit chins - they go for the groin and around the ears and also the create as much as that they'd have to be bloody big fleas!!!

As they say in Asda (is it Asda!) Happy to help!!

Yes, a course of Baytril anti-b should do it, but beware if the vets give you a 7 day supply, because my vet and my friend's vet both advised that they should be on it for at least 3 weeks.
