What pet insurance do you have? I cant see any reason for them not paying out for this particular problem.

Many policies exclude any dental work as they class it as "routine care" along with worming and vaccination.

Pet insurance will pay out for dental work as long as it isnt just a routine scale and polish. If your vet had diagnosed dental disease, gingivitis, forl's or calicivirus then they should pay out. Even without that they should pay our for sedation/ anaesthetics and drugs in relation to the abcess/ tumour. You should look at your policy again and find out what kind of policy it is.
Lifelong- will cover any vet treatment excluding routine treatments and will renew the cover every year.
12 month policy- will pay out for a specific condition for 12 months after diagnosis then exclude at renewal.
Set limit- Will pay out up to £X for any condition, could be excluded after few weeks or years depending when the limit is reached.
Accident only- as it says on the tin! Will not pay out for illness or chronic disease.
The only reason that they would not pay out for something like this is of an exclusion was put on at the time the policy was taken out, usually only applied if the animal had a excisting condition.
I strongly recommend you ring the insurance company or ask the insurance person at your vets to, after all what do you pay your premiums for if you cant claim?
Sorry for going on but I work in a vets and know how these insurance companies try to get out of paying out

Would be worth claiming for everything other than the teeth tho. You could just pay the difference for the scale and polish (roughly £35) and extractions (depends how many). Everything else (consults, anaesthetics, meds) should be claimable under abcess/tumour.
I would def mention it again when you go back to your vets, often there is a 'designated' insurance person who would be able to help. Even if your not sure it would be worth submitting the claim as theres nothing to lose really!

Keeping my fingers crossed for you that he's feeling better soon, I bet he's being spoilt rotten!
