there are people who set up little tents and watch for them,
but i think if there is enough people looking, (which there seems to be from all the tv programs i have seen on it) why don't they set up lots of small cameras and traps where there has been physical evidence, ie foot prints, remains of sheep, cows etc, and possible sightings, that would be its territory so would more than likely stay in that area, even if it envolved setting up lots of traps and lots of cameras. Then if they could get close camera evidence and actually physically capture one that is undisputed evidence. I also have no problem with them wild in the UK, as there are very few reported cases of people being attacked etc, so leaving them in the wild wouldn't do anymore damage now, since they have been there for the last 40 years anyway.
apparently ireland will have this soon, because they were getting the equivalent of a DWA license over there, so they think people will be releasing them over there.

That's interesting about Ireland.

A Panther's territory can range up to 200 square miles depending on the density of the cats. I would imagine that given the relatively small numbers of these cats that they would have large territories covering wide areas, which presents researchers with a problem when trying to get the proof.

Unfortunately the people like the government who would have the funding to do something like this do not want to, and the people that do probably do not the resources (equipment and willing volunteers).

when the DWA came into place private keepers had to get rid of there big cats, lions, tigers, black leopards etc, some went to zoos, some were destroyed and a few were released into the wild,
and sightings are still happening today, so it seems likely that they have established territorys and have bred,
hope that clears it up.

my o/h has seen a big cat down here on 2 different occasions while cycling and running - though he doesn't often mention it.

Both of them were large black cats - bigger than a sheep.
