You could ask for the vet to remove the dew claw if it is becoming a serious problem, I know several breeders who have this claw removed as a puppy. Although I did not have mine removed on my border collie as it would be unnecessary surgery, if there become a good reason and it might affect his health keeping it, I would let it go for the snip. Sorry I don't know a lot more detail, but I know that they can be removed if necessary. |

Yeah - i was thinking getting it removed if it caused a big problem. Right now she's fine but just hoping she doesn't catch it.

Don't worry too much about it my schips use their front dew claws like a thumb almost. I had to put a muzzle on one of my boys when he needed treatment for something far more painful - he just used that front claw like a crowbar and forced the muzzle off taking the claw right out of the nail bed - he never flinched.
Just keep it clean and keep an eye on it shouldn't get infected a bit of tea tree oil works wonders aiding healing and preventing, cleaning up infections. |

Some of these of these injuries will require veterinary attention but not always. If there is no nail left there now, just the quick you will probably get away with bathing it in salt water 2 or 3 times a day, stopping her licking and chewing at it and keeping it covered on walks. If part of the nail is still attached or it looks infected you will need to see your vet. Often the nail will be clipped back, cleaned and bandaged but some dogs will require sedation for this. Please note this does not entail entire removal of the dew claw, just the nail. Dew claw removal is classed as moderate to major surgery as it requires a full general anaesthetic and removal of the entire dew claw at the joint requiring the bone to be cut. It is not something that is recommended routinely though will be carried out on 'problem' nails.
