Default dying cat?

my cat Sparkie is about 15 years old now and the day before Christmas Eve he had a mad "mood" as we call them. He used to have them all the time and just run up and down the stairs, chase your feet, chase things thrown at him like pennies. It was the first one in years and I loved it because it was like having our kitten back. Since then though he's been so quiet and sorry for himself. My dad says he could be on his way out because they say you have one last burst of energy before you go lol and I'm taking him seriously although he's probably just trying to scare me lol I should be too old for it but I love my cat to bits. I know he is old so this is the thing. Because he's so down now it's just worrying me. He's still eating and everything else but when he's in the house he just doesn't want to be near anyone. The night of his fun mood he slept on my bed which again he hasn't done since he was younger and now he won't even come near me lol.

So guess I'm just worrying because I don't want to lose him. Do you think it was one final burst of energy or that he's just old and to stop worrying?

Could be he's ill, one of mine did this a few years ago, didn't want anyone near him and was sleeping at the bottom of the garden under my boat at night!
He was about the same age as yours and I thought he was on his way out, but I took him to the vet for a checkup and it turned out he'd been in a fight and had an infected bite, you couldn't see it without looking really hard though, a 1 week course of antibiotics and he was fine again.
He lived another two years and we finally had to have him put to sleep in February this year as he had liver failure.
So it's worth taking him to the vet and see what they think, don't write him off just yet!

give him a good check over to make sure there is nothing wrong physically then relax, my old girl who was 20 that i lost this year used to have what i called kitten fits right up to the end.
most of the time for the last 5 years she would have a quick cuddle then find her own space and sleep but occasionally she would do the wall of death around the room up and down the stairs etc just like she did as a kitten lol.

Graham is absolutely right!!!

15 is old, but not necessarily for a cat! Lots of cats live past 15, but sometimes things start to go wrong. One of the problems with diagnosing cats who are ill or in pain is that cats very quickly compensate and learn to live with their problems and sometimes we miss the signs.

No offence to your dad, but I don't think the cat is necessarily on his way out, I think he could be ill. At 15 you could almost expect him to start to develop problems. If your cat's character has changed, it could be that he is ill and I really do think you should take him to a vet and have him checked over.

Have you noticed that he is drinking a lot more than usual or pee-ing a lot more. At 15 it's very common for cats to develop kidney problems. That doesn't mean he's going to die, it just means that you need to find out and get some treatment for him and maybe change his diet to a more suitable one for an older cat (less protein is very important for older cats as their kidneys don't filter the protein out as well as in younger cats).

The other possibility is his teeth. He could have a bad tooth that is causing him pain (and we all know how awful toothache is!).

Read through this old thread and you'll see what I mean. cat has become grumpy over the last week or so..

It could be that a simple visit to a vet could sort him out and turn him back into the happy cat he was.

Please, for his sake, take him to your vet and ask him to check him out.
