Hi, i have a 4'x2'x2.5' (lxdxh) wooden cage, with a mesh front. Like a viv but with a mesh front lol. As the height, i can have ropes and ladders and stuff from the roof. Is that ok for 1.2 rats?

Sounds like it would work for 3 rats. Only other thing I'd recommend is a couple of breeding boxes to seperate mothers and litters into, cuts down on stress and possible cannibalism issues.

What i was thinking of doing was putting in some some bird nest boxes for them to nest in and for the babies. Would i have to seperate the male from the females?

Some don't, I do, after a rather unfortunate incident with one of my breeding males and a litter of pups........Some males are great fathers others aren't.

For the first litter I had two males and two females in together.
Then I got the second litter.
Neither boy hurt the babies even though it was obvious only one of them was the father to both litters.

I decided to give the girls a break and took out the boys.
They have lived happily together since.
I will now only put the male in with the 'chosen' female when I want her to get pregnant.
I keep the two boys in a 64ltr RUB. They are as happy as larry although they do get about a half hour out running around every day.

I've just bought a very large cage to use as a 'playground' for the rats. I'm intending to rotate the RUB's so all the groups of rats get 2 days a week in the 'playground'.

Would i be better of using the mesh doors at the front, or glass doors with vents along the side?
