I'm sorry for your loss. But as saxon said I've never heard of anyone keeping rats outside. Pet rats are indoor pets not outdoor pets. they do differ from ferrets, rabbits and guinea pigs. Please don't put them outside again.

why shouldn't rats be kept outside? As long as they are kept secure and warm there's no reason not to. And you can't use this a reason to say keep them inside. Rabbits get attacked in their hutches all the time. It's just a horrible accident, with no one to blame

my rats are in a hutch with a built over canopy and chick wire round they are in a two tire cage with outside run and more toys than my kids!!! they have an outside heater for the cold nights and a bed area with 7 blankets on top of this my husband build a rain proof cover that goes over the canopy the total area is 2 meters sq you gotta see it to believe it they were spoilt i thought the chick wire would keep anything out and only checked on them just after midnight to make sure the fire works hadnt upset them!!

I've got chickens and can tell you chicken wire won't keep a determined and hungry rat out!!! get some weldmesh, the 1" x 1/2" or even 1/2" x 1/2" 16g stuff should be better at keeping vermin out... but if something's hungry enough and it's got all night to do it, it'll get in somehow

aw no poor ratties..like saxon said was there 8 bodies?

once curlys settled from the trauma are you going to get him another companion? or bring him in to spend more time with the family? obviously rats are really social like u already know. i'm just wondering if being alone is for the best with him after what hes been through. my two sit comforting, grooming playing together, and i've heard rats that end up being kept alone don't do so good.

sorry for your loss hun

I wasn't cristising the fact they were outside it's just I've never heard of them being kept that way.
I know mine would chew their way out of a wooden hutch in no time.
Neither was I blaming anyone.

I had two staffy's get into my rabbit shed, a garage actually, a few years ago and they killed about 30 rabbits. It was horrendous. The poor things were all rescues.
My garage door was locked and the side door shut but they managed to wriggle through a small hole in the back.

I hope Curly recovers and doesn't suffer too badly for the ordeal.

I think keeping any animal outside iS their own choice.

Some people have house rabbits and some shove them in a small hutch and never let them out!

But i am wondering if a cat coul/wouldd of got in the hucth and took on 9 rats.

Maybe it was a weasel or somthing - anyhow - maybe a in-door cage or keeping him in the shed with a friend

hes in the shed for now cos i have indoor rabbits so theyd freak if i bring him indoors and so would my greyhound got to give him some time to settle then i will look for a new friend for him. my 9 got on fine ,and because there was so much for them to do in the hutch by way of toys ropes ladders running wheels and tubes, they hardly chewed the wood. they were very happy ratties when i got my rats all of them were rescues from the rspca they came along and was amazed with the set up i gave my rats.but for the moment the last thing he needs is a new rat to compete with hes tucked up for now and is sound asleep poor fella
