I think you should just have his nuts chopped off because the other one were it just makes him sterile wouldnt calm him down. one of our boys spot we couldnt handle him before he was crazy hyper and kept trying to hump the dog up the road. we had his nuts taken and he;s calmed down alot but is still sometimes a problem.

Mustela, the original question was "is ther ea difference between neutering and castration", so Browner's response was very valid.

i have a question or rather an observation i had my poodle cross yorkie castrated about five years ago but he still has all the natural urges to hump our other dog mysty who is also netuered and does so at every opportunity, so surely it is not always the case that the sexual urge is elimated by having a dogs testicles removed or is it that i have the exception to the rule in storm?

Not being funny, but did your vet tell you at the time that he had removed both testicles. Not sure about dogs, cos I've never had a dog castrated, but in cats there is a condition known as monorchidism, which means that only 1 testicle descends, the other in inside somewhere and can be anywhere in the body cavity, although it's usually somewhere near the scrotum area (often around about the kidneys). If the vet can't find that other testicle, then it remains inside the body cavity producing testosterone and sperm and therefore the cat's sexual urges continue.

As I've said I'm not sure how common this condition is in dogs, or even if it exists, but quite honestly can't see any reason why it wouldn't.

Having said that in other posts where people have asked advice about neutering, there have been more than one posting about pets still humping other pets, so it's not uncommon.

Just wondered??

He definately had both testicles removed as he was quite ill afterwards didnt react well to the anesthetic unfortunately and well he was castrated as punishment for impregnating other dog after i had payed out to have her studded to a fine kc registered poodle lol but he got in first and i didnt want anymore matings after she had had one litter, so think someone just forgot to tell him he wasnt supposed to do that sort of thing anymore lol. Mind oyu the up sode of the mating was three of the four pupies went as dogs to help people with disabilites one as a hearing dog for the deaf and two as dogs for the disabled which i think was great.

Yes dogs for the disabled and hearing dogs are excellent organisations. Well done you have 3 dogs passing their 'exams' to do that!

The founding of both organisations involved Lesley Scott-Ordish who founded Pro-dogs and Pets as Therapy. Great woman!! Big loss to the dog world when she died!

Can't we just have one thread where people don't slag each others posts off
It is all relevant, all the questions have been answered, and I have found the thread informative myself as I was wondering the difference between them all the other day myself when I had my ferret hobs castrated.
Good thread ppl!!

Just to add to the lady who's CASTRATED dog still mounts her SPAYED bitch, I know another lady who has two labradors and they are the same, the male is constantly trying to hump the female but ONLY when visitors are there, wonder if it's more about dominance and alpha male behaviour rather than the sex?

I can honestly say i dont think it is a dominance thing with storm as mysty is definately above him in hireichy(sp) in our family group, i just have no idea why he has never stopped his humping behaviour. It is an intersting theory though and one i hadnt thought of and must admit the only thing he humps is mysty, to me it is one of lifes mysteries and one i doubt i will ever be able to solve conclusively.

How old was the dog when you had him castrated? When they are young, the humping behaviour tends to be a purely hormonally driven procedure, but as they (presumably!) get pleasure from it, it becomes a learnt behaviour - like learning to beg or sit etc. for a reward.
