Default Is there a difference?

Hi,

We're going to get our puppy neutered in the next few weeks and were wondering whether there is a difference between neutering and castration? The only reason I ask is that whilst looking at rescue dogs at BDACH you can search for either neutered or castrated...

I think neutering is having them unable to reproduce and castration having their nuts chopped off completely.

I would imagine it is similar to the difference between sterilising a woman and giving her a hysterectomy??

but with neutering does it still mean that the testicals are producing testosterone and therefore it won't calm him down that much?

Yes, it means the same thing - effectively if you castrate anything, you neuter it! The term castration seems to be more used in dogs, but neutering is the usual term in cats, but they both mean the same thing.

Having them unable to reproduce is a vasectomy, but that leaves the hormones (testosterone), so the animal would still mate and have all the same urges (just like in you blokes), just not produce any progeny!

It has been done, but why anyone would choose this is beyond me!!

yes, a vasectomy is where they simply have their tubes tied, so they are unable to inpregnant a female, but the will still be fully hormonal (leg humping etc) and they will still display mating behaviour. Castration however, is complete removal of the testes... they will not produce testostorone and therefore any sexual /mating behaviour is eliminated.

Neutering is an asexual term. Therefore you can neuter both a male or a female animal.
To neuter a male is to castrate it and to neuter a female is to have it speyed.

Browner, No one asked what spaying is. They were asking the difference between castrating and vasectomizing, which are indeed, totally different procedures.
